Ballarat to host Australian cross country trials

23 January 2001 - A number of Australia’s established stars of distance running as well as the aspiring next generation will be out in force at the Selection Trial for the World Cross Country Championships to be held at the University of Ballarat this Friday, 26 January.

Leading the charge will be marathon stars Kerryn McCann and Steve Moneghetti who is aiming for his 10th World Cross Country Championships which this year will be held in Dublin, Ireland from 24-25 March.

Joining ‘Mona’ and McCann in Ballarat will be Ireland’s Olympic 5000m silver medallist Sonia O’Sullivan, Australian Olympic distance representatives Craig Mottram, Michael Power, Lee Troop and Sisay Bezabeh, and 16-year-old Olympian and 2000 World Junior medallist Georgie Clarke.

World junior record holder over 3000m steeplechase Melissa Rollison (QLD) will also be competing along with the rejuvanated Suzy Walsham from NSW who last week clocked 4:12.9 for 1500m, 11 years after running her personal best of 4:11.04.

Racing commences at 6.15pm at the University of Ballarat with the men’s race over 8km and the women’s over 6km.
