Organisers of the 58th Campaccio International Cross Country, an IAAF Cross Country Permit meeting in the Italian town of San Giorgio su Legnano, have turned to some of the top young distance-running talent around the world to showcase their event on 6 January.

Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei and Bahrain’s Ruth Jebet, both 18 years of age and gold medallists from the IAAF World Junior Championships this summer, are among the international stars announced by the Campaccio organisers.

The Italian challenge in the men’s race, last won by a local athlete in 1993 when Francesco Panetta took the title, is led by 2012 European cross-country champion Andrea Lalli and 2014 European marathon champion Daniele Meucci.

Other top international runners in the 10km race include USA’s Garrett Heath, Canada’s Mo Ahmed and Poland’s Krystian Zalewski, the European steeplechase silver medallist.

Italy’s rising star Federica Del Buono in the women’s 6km race will provide a lot of local interest and she showed she’s in good shape with a win at the strong Italian cross-country race in Volpiano last month.

Alongside Jebet, the international entrants include the talented Kenyan trio of Irene Cheptai, Janet Kisa and Peres Jepchichir, as well as Belgium’s Almensch Belete.
