Debrecen inaugurates World Youth Championships venue

1 June 2001 - Debrecen, Hungary - The IAAF/Westel World Youth Championships will be held in a brand new stadium in Hungary's second largest city, Debrecen, on 11-15 July 2001. The attractive new facility was inaugurated today with the Hungarian Youth Championships, a competition for the same age group (under-18) as the World Youth Championships in July.

IAAF General Secretary, Istvan Gyulai said at the Inauguration that the Stadium would provide a marvellous setting for the World Youth Championships, the biggest event Hungary has ever organised in terms of participating nations, with athletes from 150 countries expected to attend.

Mayor Lajos Kosa announced that with 41 days to go, the Championships could begin tomorrow, the City is ready for the event.

The new stadium and the surrounding high-standard facilities are designed to be a new centre not only for athletics but also for other Olympic sports.

"Our goal is to become one of the IAAF recognised Training Centres," said the Director of the Sport Complex who is also the President of the Organising Committee, Mr. Mihaly Orendi.
