Two-time world marathon champion Edna Kiplagat will return to the scene of her triumph in last year’s Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run when she defends her title at the IAAF Gold Label Road Race in Glasgow on Sunday 4 October.

The 36-year-old Kenyan will face two European champions from Great Britain in the prestigious half marathon.

Jo Pavey, winner of the European 10,000m title in Zurich last year, has already announced her participation.

The 41-year-old will also be joined on the start line by Gemma Steel, winner of the senior women’s title at the European Cross Country Championships in Samakov, Bulgaria, in December last year.

Steel, 29, has established herself as the leading woman of British road running over the past couple of years, a reputation underlined at the Great North Run last Sunday when she finished runner-up to Kenya’s Mary Keitany for the second successive year.

However, Pavey and Steel face a tough challenge in Glasgow if Kiplagat manages to be in the same form she demonstarted in the 2014 race. Kiplagat finished a clear winner in 1:07:57, breaking her compatriot Joyce Chepchumba’s 14-year-old course record by 55 seconds.

“It’s one of the best courses I’ve run on,” said Kiplagat. “It’s mostly flat but with some small hills. That’s a good combination.”
