Marco Gaiardo from Italy and Andrea Mayr from Austria were the victors at the 13th Feuerkogel Berglauf (Sun10 Aug).

Viewing the mountain the day before the race the summit was covered with heavy clouds, just as it was 11 years ago before the European Trophy, but thankfully the weather forecast promised a sunny morning, ideal for the race, and delivered that picture.

The races started in Ebensee. Shortly after the start of the men’s division when asphalted road changes to steep mountain path, the top runners started to sort themselves out with Gaiardo, Dlugosz, Kroell, and Kosovelj already at the head of the field.

Gaiardo dominated the race and won with the fourth best ever time for the course. In history only New Zealand legend Wyatt has been faster (in 2005, 06 and 07).

Dlugosz was comfortably second, while Kroell and Kosovelj were fighting for third position up until the last kilometre, at which point where the track got flatter Kosovelj broke away.

In the history of this race, only 13 results on this course have been run in under one hour, and four of those were this year!

In the women’s race Andrea Mayr, the ex-World and European champion, was running in first position from start to finish, and ultimately improved the course record by more than 4 minutes.

Ex-record holder Anna Frost from New Zealand was second just 10 seconds behind her old record. Mateja Kosovelj (SLO) finished third – the same position as her brother Mitja in the men’s race.

In the annual overall WMRA Grand Prix competition Anna Frost is still leading with 305 points, Ana Milesova (CZE) is second, and Pavla Matyasova is third. It is interesting, that we have 4 different winners in five GP races.

In the men’s competition Wyatt is in first position with 3 victories and 300 points, Gaiardo came closer to him and now had 260 points and Dlughosz is third with 207 points.

The next fixture of the WMRA Grand Prix will be after the World Trophy – SchneebergLauf, as the 6th GP race will take place on 28 October.
