Kiprop, Chesir win 5000s in Kapsabet - Fourth AK weekend meeting Day 2

Kapsabet, KenyaTwentyyearold Michael Kiprop ran a tactical race to win the men's 5000m at the Fourth Athletics Kenya Weekend Meeting in Kapsabet on Saturday (29 April).

Kiprop timed 14:05.0 to beat Nathan Lagat with a sprint finish before a huge crowd on the second and final day of this successful meeting at this historic stadium.

Kiprop stayed among the leading group for a better part of the race and shot to the front after the bell. Lagat timed 14:07.3 as Richard Kandie timed 14:11.7 for his third place. Rebecca Chesir won the women's race in 16:06.4 with Monica Chepkoech second in 16:07.2 and Mercy Cherono third in 16:30.3.

Twice world junior cross country silver medallist, Veronica Nyaruai, dropped out in the ninth lap due to what her coach, Noah Ngeny, the 2000 Sydney Olympic 1500m gold medallist, said was testing waters for her new club.

Irene Chelagat won the women's 1500m race in 4:21.4 with Jebichi Yator second in 4:28.0 and Sheila Chepkirui third in 4:28.6.

The meeting was graced by a galaxy of current and former world stars like Ngeny, reigning world 5000m champion Benjamin Limo, Olympic steeplechase champion Ezekiel Kemboi, former three-time world steeplechase champion Moses Kiptanui, National Olympic Committee of Kenya chairman Kipchoge Keino, former sprinter Tegla Chamabwai-Sang, former national coach Mike Kosgei, former African 800m record holder Sammy Kosgei, among others. Also present were Athletics Kenya chairman Isaiah Kiplagat, vice chairman Lt. Gen Jackson Tuwei, Secretary General David Okeyo, his assistant Ibrahim Hussein, among others.
 
At the end of the meeting, Okeyo announced the team to represent Kenya at the Eastern Region Junior Championships to be held in Khartoum, Sudan, on May 8-9. They are Flavious Kwamboka (800m), Sheila Chepkirui (1500m), Jebichi Yator (3000m), Pauline Mutwa (5000m), Tabitha Jelagat (3000m SC), Jackson Kivuva, Remmy Limo (800m, 1500m), Ronald Kipchumba (3000m SC), Samwel Ndungu (5000m), and William Tarus (10,000m). Team officials will ne: Peter Nyambane (team manager), Boiyon Kiplagat Kosgei (coach), and Ephemer Kagendo (chaparone).
