Marion Jones to raise funds for Children in Cayman Islands

13 November 2001 - World and Olympic Champion Marion Jones has been invited by the Cayman Islands Athletics Association and the Caribbean Utilities Corporation to attend a fundraising weekend in the Cayman Islands.

As part of the “Unity for Youth in Sports” programme, Marion Jones will be flying to Grand Cayman tomorrow Wednesday 14 of November and will stay in the Cayman Islands until Sunday 18 November.

Jones will be welcomed by the major sports authorities of the country including Hon. Edna Moyle, Minister for Sports at the Cayman Islands Governement, Mr Carson Ebanks, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Sports and Mr Bernie Bush, President of the Cayman Islands Athletic Association.

During her visit in the Caribbean Island, Jones will address students from primary and secondary schools at the Agape Family Worship Center. She will be accompanied in this by the two leading track and field athletes of the Cayman Islands: Kareem Streete-Thompson, 2001 World Indoor silver medalist at long jump, and Cydonie Mothersill, 2001 World Championships finalist at 200m.

The visit also includes a Gala Fundraising dinner on Friday 16th November and a one mile fun run, “Marion’s Mile”.

Jones, whose mother is from Belize and who completed a victory lap in Sydney holding both the American and the Belize flag, will also attend a benefit Cocktail reception offered by the Belize Cayman Citizens Association in favour of  the victims of recent Hurricane Iris.
