Men's 200 metres heats

Shawn Crawford of the US and Christopher Williams of Jamaica each won their respective heats in 20.86, the two best times of the qualifying round.

Only winners of the six heats were guaranteed a place in the semifinal round; the remaining six spots were awarded on a time basis.

The only other performances under 21 seconds came from Holland's Patrick van Balkom (20.90) and Allyn Condon of Great Britain (20.93), who finished one-two in the morning's first heat.

Condon's teammate, European seasonal leader Christian Malcolm, also advanced with a victory in a relaxed 21.05, as did Kevin Little of the US (21.09) and Radek Zachoval of the Czech Republic (21.16).

For these championships, only lanes three through six are being used for the 200 metres, limiting the heat sizes to four and putting an even heavier premium on fast times.

Not surprisingly, all but one of the heat winners were assigned lane six.
