Men's 3000 metre Steeplechase

The field moved steadily away at the gun with very little separating the field for the first two laps.

At the water jump with just over four laps to go, new world record holder, Brahim BOULAMI (MAR) made a move to the front, with World and Olympic champion, Rueben KOSGEI (KEN) responding.

As they passed through the finish line with four laps to go, BOULAMI began to stretch the field. There was movement throughout the group with Julius NAYAMU (KEN) moving through at the water jump to lead a now bunched field with three laps to go.

There was barely eight metres separating the field as they passed through 2000 metres in 5:39.32.

With just over two laps to go, Stephen CHERONO (KEN) moved around the outside to challenge the lead, but BOULAMI responded, to lead the field as they passed the finish line.

Along the back straight, BOULAMI and CHERONO continued to push each other with Rueben KOSGEI sitting neatly in third.

At the bell, CHERONO began what was to be a long run for home, showing rapid acceleration. BOULAMI and Rueben KOSGEI responded with CHERONO to generate a fifteen metre lead from the chasing group with half a lap remaining. With 250 metres remaining, CHERONO appeared to lose rhythm, dropping away from BOULAMI and Rueben KOSGEI.

BOULAMI made a smooth clearance of the final water jump to take a small lead over Rueben KOSGEI, which he held to the finish. KOSGEI was a clear second with CHERONO able to just hold on to third from the fast finishing Kipkirui MISOI (KEN).
