Nagmeldin Ali Abubakr became the Sudan’s first World Youth champion as he shrewdly paced himself to the 400 metres gold medal in a championship record 46.11.

As some of the Sudanese’s rivals blazed a trail round the first half of the race, Abubakr bided his time, saving plenty of power for a surge in the latter half of the race that saw him leave the early leaders as if they were standing still.

Cedric Goodman, of the United States, who took the silver with 46.42, gave chase, but it was all in vain.

Croatia won their second medal of the day thanks to a fine effort from Zeljko Vincek with 47.45.
