Men Triple Jump Qualification

For once, Sweden's Christian Olsson was held under seventeen metres, but his single-jump 16.99 exceeded the 16.95 automatic qualifying distance set forth by the organizers, so there was no cause for last year's double world champion to be alarmed.

The top performances of the day were a pair of 17.16 jumps from European under-23 champion Dmitriy Valyukevich of Belarus and Ukraine's Mykolay Savolaynen, the latter a personal-best.

Expected strong performances came from Paris silver medallist Yoandri Betanzos of Cuba (17.10), Birmingham finalist Marian Oprea of Romania (17.01), South American record holder Jadel Gregorio of Brazil (16.96) and France's Julien Kapek (16.95).

Converted long jumper Danila Burkenya of Russia survived in a nail-biter for the eighth qualifying position, as his 16.79 prevailed in a countback against Hristos Meletoglou of Greece at the same distance, despite the latter's national record jump.

The most significant among those exiting the competition was Russian indoor champion, 20-year-old Aleksandr Sergeyev (yearly best 17.23), who was mired squarely in the middle of the competition at 16.60.
