The world record holder and defending champion controlled the race from start to finish and won comfortably. The Algerian Djabir Said-Guerni achieved the second place to the final. Cuba's Norberto Tellez, silver medallist in Athens '97, qualified for the final as one of the fastest, as did Kenya's Kimwetich. The first heat was dominated by Hezekiel Sepeng (RSA) with a time of 1:45.20, who beat Italy's Andrea Longo (1:45.63). The bronze madallist in Athens '97, Rich Kenah (USA) was the third of this heat and did not qualify for the final. The third and last heat was for the Kenya's Japhet Kimutai, world junior record holder and African champion, who won easily with 1:47.74. German Schumann, European champion last year, reached the other place to the final. |

Wilson Kipketer ha realizado el mejor tiempo de esta ronda
clasificatoria, venciendo en la segunda serie con 1:44.87. El plusmarquista mundial y
vigente campeon controlo en todo momento la carrera y arranco en los ultimos metros para
vencer comodamente. El argelino Said-Guerni consiguio el segundo puesto para la final. El
cubano Tellez segundo en Atenas'97, y el keniata Kimwetich, se clasificaron por tiempos
para la final. En la primera serie domino el sudafricano Hezekiel Sepeng con un tiempo de
1:45.20 por delante del italiano Longo (1:45.63). La medalla de bronce en Atenas'97, Rich
Kenah (USA) fue tercera en esta serie y no se clasifico para la final. Por ultimo, la
tercera serie fue para el keniano Japhet Kimutai, recordman mundial junior y campeon
africano, que domino claramente a sus rivales con 1:47.74. El aleman Schumann, campeon de
Europa el pasado ano en Budapest, le acompanara a la final.  |
