20 October 2000 - Romania's Marian Oprea inherited the title of world junior champion from his compatriot Ionut Punga, the 1998 winner, thanks to a leap of 16.41, the last jump of the contest.

Oprea had led from the start with leaps of 16.21 in the first round and 16.32 two rounds later but suddenly found himself under pressure when Cuba's Yoandri Betanzos, who has a personal best of 16.72, went from fifth to first with his last effort of 16.34.

However Oprea responded in suitable fashion and recovered the gold with a mark just 8cm short of his personal best.

Qatar's Mohammed Abdel Aziz took the bronze medal with 16.29, while China's Junjie Gu - who has the best mark in the world this year by a junior with 16.89 - was out of the medals with just 16.26.

The tight competition was one of unprecedented depth with, for the first time ever at the world juniors, the leading eight men all over 16 metres.
