Morocco and Egypt the focus - South African Youth and Junior Championships

Marli Knoetze narrowly missed the African junior women's Shot Put record, as Tinus de Bruin set a national junior men's Decathlon record at the South African Youth and Junior Championships staged at the Herman Immelman Stadium in Ekurhuleni (1 – 2 April 2005).

Athletics South Africa Development Manager Molatelo Malhopo confirmed the two-day event was used to select teams for the World Youth Championships in Marrakech, Morocco in July and the Africa Junior Championships in Egypt next September.

Junior and Youth Shot and Discus doubles

Still only 17 years old, Knoetze improved her career best by 20 centimetres with a massive heave of 16.51m. This is just two centimetres shy of the Africa record set by her compatriot Veronica Abrahmse in 1999.  She also went on to retain her national junior discus title with a modest 44.26m effort amid steady drizzle.

"I did not expect to improve in the Shot Put by such a huge margin especially since (there was not so much opposition) as Simone du Tiot who beat me last year opted for the youth competition. However, since we will meet at the senior national championship, I am sure of the necessary competition I need to better the Africa record," confirmed Knoetze.

Du Tiot comfortably won the Youth titles in Shot put (15.85) and Discus (50.06). "My overall goal is to win a medal Morocco. The challenge from Knoetze at senior championships will just give me motivations to do better," says Du Toit. Although they are only teenagers, they are the top two shot putters in the country.

National junior Decathlon record

Meanwhile Tinus de Bruin braved the steady drizzle on the second day of the competition to set a national junior men's Decathlon record when he amassed 5676 points. Previously the record of 5415 points, was held by Jonathan Calitz since 2001. "I hope this opens the way for my selection to the African Junior Championships. That could be a major motivation to further improve the record," said an exhausted De Bruin.

Elsewhere new find Reuben Majola (46.76) won the junior 400m. Pieter Smith (47.03) and Ruaan Grobler (47.24) who were second and third also set career bests in the one lap event. "Since I joined the University of Johannesburg my training has improved I want to run a low 46 at the World Student Games," said Majola.

Junior and Youth 800m titles fall to friends

Schoolmates at Louis Botha High School in Bloemfontein, Jan Masanamela (1:49.27) and Bongane Mgemane (1:48.69) won the youth and junior men's 800m respectively. Both aggressive frontrunners, they ran the fastest times of their fledging careers. "I hope to improve this time in Morocco," said Masanamela. Mgebane was equally optimistic. "With Kenyans in the race I should improve at the Africa Junior championships in Egypt.”

Notable Youth Shot and Discus wins

Other notable winners in the Youth competition came from Jan Petrus Hoffman who won the boys’ Shot Put (20.42) and Discus (53.42). Keenan Watson (7.56) won the Long Jump, as Sean Stone (2.10) excelled in the High Jump.  Andre Strydom (14.02) in the 110m Hurdles, as prevailed Nombuleli Mkenku (12.08) won the girls 100m

Eugene Wicksell won the girl's youth 400m in a career best of 55.90.  Aware of the pressure to excel like her parents, Wicksell says all she wants for now is to enjoy the sport. "I will be satisfied making the team to Morocco," said Wicksell.

"Some coaches and parents make the mistake of pushing young athletes too hard too soon. As a result these athletes lose interest in the sport. We will not push Eugene to win medals,” said her mother Ilze Wicksell holder of the South Africa 1000m record. Her husband Ray Wicksell represented the United States in the 5000m at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
