Cheboksary, Russia - As is traditional on the eve of IAAF World Athletics Series events, the 23rd IAAF World Race Walking Cup was marked by an IAAF Dinner in the host city on Friday night (9 May).

The Centralny Restaurant in Cheboksary, which given the name is not surprisingly to be found in the heart of the capital of Chuvashia, played host to 150 guests who were welcomed by IAAF President Lamine Diack.

To the sounds of a string quartet, called ‘Harmony’, the guests enjoyed a cocktail and were later entertained by a large group display of the national dance of the Chuvash Republic.

Central to the formal proceedings there were also a number of presentations made by the President Diack on behalf of the IAAF.

On the day of his 50th birthday Nikolay Fedorov, President of Chuvash Republic, was presented with a Senegalese painting as a personal gift by President Diack, and he also received an IAAF Plaque from the head of the sport's world governing body in honour of the occasion of the Republic's hosting of the World Cup.

President Fedorov reciprocated by handing Mr. Diack with a number of gifts including a special pillow filled with hops, which is manufactured by Cheboksary’s brewing company. The pillow we were assured would aid good sleep without intoxication!

The presence of many World, Olympic and Area champions, medallists and recordholders, the Dinner was also the occasion to honour two of the host nations finest Race Walking stars - 1996 Olympic 10km and 2003 World 20km gold medallist Yelena Nikolayeva and 1988 Olympic 50km champion Vyacheslav Ivanenko.

The audience was reminded of Nikolayeva and Ivanenko’s feats with video footage of their Olympic victories, before both athletes received IAAF Plaques from President Diack.
