19 October 2000 - Santiago de Chile - The President of the Republic of Chile, Ricardo Lagos, received today IAAF President Lamine Diack and members of the IAAF Council, in the Palacio de la Moneda.

On this occasion, President Diack presented Ricardo Lagos with the IAAF Golden Order of Merit, the highest IAAF award, for his exceptional contribution to the development and promotion of athletics in Chile.

Chile was one of the founding members of the IAAF in 1912.

President Diack was in turn presented with the Order of the Great Cross Bernardo O’Higgins, named after the founder of modern Chile, by the Chilean Foreign Minister Soledad Alvear.
