Sprinters Wilhelm van der Vvyfer, Tshegofatso Meshoe, Nombulelo Mkenku and Bevin Smith stole the limelight on the second day (8) of the South Africa Junior and Youth Championships.

The two day event was used by Athletics South Africa to select teams the World Junior Championships in August as well as Southern Africa regional competitions in May and July.

Looking sharp in the qualifying rounds, Van der Vvyfer blew away the field in the finals to win the boy’s youth 200m in a career best of 20.91. “Besides winning the race my main goal was to break the 21 second mark. That way I will get the recognition I deserve” says the 16 year old sprinter from Stellenbosch.

Little-known Tshegofatso Meshoe captured attention when he won the junior men’s 200m in 21.05. He says he achieved this feat at a coast. “I withdrew from the 400m in which I am quite strong to concentrate on the 200m so that I can make the team to Beijing. I hope I am selected,“ said Meshoe.

In the junior women’s contest Nombulelo Mkenku won the 200m in a career best of 23.94. However it was the barefooted Bevin Smith who again captured more attention winning the girl’s youth 200m in 24.23 seconds.

“I do not want to place myself under pressure so I will take one competition at a time. Hopefully in the year to come I will get a chance to compete at the Olympics,” says Smith.

Meanwhile the junior men’s 400m Hurdles was as expected a thriller with the top four positions determined only at the last hurdle. Juan Bloem (50.78) carried the day. He was followed by Wiekus Jonck (51.00), Louis Peacock (51.21) and Tiaan Jacobs (51.31).

In probably the busiest day of his young career Tshamano Setone progressed through the preliminaries to win the junior men’s 1500m in 3:47.52. He crowned the day by winning the 5000m (14:30.92).

The junior men’s 800m was a thriller with Dirk Gouws edging out Jan Masenmela at the finish line. They both locked 1:49.29.

Other notable winners were junior men’s javelin thrower Robert Oosthuizen (76.20m) and long jumper Keenan Watson (7.74), Junior women’s discuss thrower Simone du Tiot (48.58) and  800m runner Angela Wagner (2:07.00), Andre Olivier (1:49.58) in the youth boys 800m and Corne Fredericks (51.38) in the youth boys 400m Hurdles
