The official unveiling of the statues of four runners on the Old Town Square took place last month in Bydgoszcz, Poland, which in July (8 to 13) will host the 12th IAAF World Junior Championships.
The four statues of runners have been added to over 100 already existing general works of art which are dotted about the city centre, as part of the promotion of the Championships. To officially mark the occasion Rafal Bruski, the Governor of Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship, Konstanty Dombrowicz, the Mayor of Bydgoszcz, Maciej Grzeskowiak, the Vice-Mayor of City, and Krzysztof Wolsztynski, the general director of the World Junior Championships joined representatives of the City Council in the unveiling.
The runners which are designed by an artist from Bydgoszcz, Michal Kubiak, have been sculpted in four colours (red, black, yellow and white) to depict the global ethnic diversity of the athletes who will compete at the Championships. The statues have now been situated near Luczniczka, at Gdanska Street (junction Sniadeckich and Mickiewicza Street), at Kruszwicka Street and Kardynala Wyszynskiego Street.
The stadium modernisation in final stages
The work being carried out on the Zdzislaw Krzyszkowiak stadium which will host the championships is on course with the first and second maroon layers of the track surface having been laid. The track will eventually become blue in appearance when the filling aggregate and final third layer have been added on top.
The elevation of the ‘B’ spectator tribune on Gdanska Street side of the stadium is also being completed, while the work connected with the new tribune roof is in progress according to schedule.
