Wind pushes Maggi over 7 metres again

17 April 2002 - São Paulo- The 2002 season has started in great fashion for Brazilian Maurren Higa Maggi. The 25 year-old long jumper’s performance was the highlight of the “2º Torneio FPA” held on Saturday by the São Paulo State Federation at the Ibirapuera track.

Maggi leaped to 7.17m, but the wind was slightly over the 2m/s limit (2.6). Her best legal jump of the day was 6.92 (w. 1.6). Maurren, coached by Nélio Alfano Moura and one of the best South American athletes, holds the area records of the long jump with 7.26 (’99 in the altitude of Bogotá), 100 metres hurdles (12.71 in 2001), and Triple Jump (14.32 this season).

Last March 9th, she went over the 7 metre barrier for the second time in her career, when jumping 7.01 (w. 1.3) in the Paulista suburban city of São Caetano do Sul. Both the 7.17w and the 7.01 are respectively the 2002 World’s best in windy and legal conditions.

Maggi also competed in the 100 metres hurdles, and took the victory in 13.29.

The best performance on the men’s side, was achieved by sprinter Cláudio Roberto Sousa, who ran the 100 in 10.19 (w. 1.3). 400 metre runner Diego Venâncio broke the South American under-18 record, when second with 46.65 in the one lap sprint behind Luiz Henrique da Silveira (46.63).

Other winners were, Anselmo Gomes da Silva (13.68 in 110mh), Eronilde de Araújo (51.03 in 400mh), Jessé de Lima (2.21 in HJ), Thiago Carahyba Dias (7.70/1.6 in LJ), Marcos Antônio da Costa (16.15/-2.3 in TJ), Luiz Fernando da Silva (72.67 in JT), Perla dos Santos in 400mh (58.44), Keila da Costa Silva (13.80/3.0 in TJ), Elisângela Adriano (17.69 in SP and 53.04 in DT).

Also on Saturday, in Maringá, in the southern State of Paraná, Fernando Alex Fernandes became the 12th Brazilian athlete to achieve the qualifying standard for the 2002 World Junior championships in Kingston, Jamaica.

Fernandes won the 3000m Steeplechase in 8:55.37, which is his second best performance at the event, after his PB of 8:54.94, when took the silver medal at the 2001 South American Junior Championships in Santa Fe, Argentina.
