Women 200 metres Final

Despite putting her all into it and marking a new personal best for the event, Anneisha McLaughlin was unable to withstand the power of Great Britain’s Vernicha James, as the Briton won the women’s 200 metres by a hair’s breadth here this evening.

Indeed just a hundredth of a second separated the 2 as James crossed the line in a new PB of 22.93 to McLaughlin’s 22.94.

Even though James had looked the stronger throughout the race, with her powerful smooth style, McLaughlin was moved to greater things as the stadium literally reverberated to the roars of the twenty five thousand crowd nearly filling the stadium – and sounding like double that number, but unfortunately that was not enough.

The Jamaican pulled her way alongside James and the pair ran the last ten metres side by side, even if it had looked earlier as though McLaughlin had run out of steam.

But at the line it was James who had the advantage.

Third place went to the USA’s Sanya Richards in 23.09 seconds.
