Britain's Jessica Ennis extended her points lead after the second of the seven disciplines, with a tally of 1914pts to Sarah Kern of Germany's 1838. Tetyana Dyachenko, of the Ukraine, is third overall before the shot put with 1809, 26 points clear of Hunter Gayle, the leading American.

As a high jumper with a best of 1.80 metres, this was always something of a points backer for the Briton, who had a long wait before even having to enter the competition, so she may have expected slightly better than her 1.75m clearance for 916pts.

Dyachenko had the best result, her 1.81m saw her move right up the rankings, being 12cm better than everyone in her group with the sole exception of Kern, who managed 1.72.
