Vita Pavlysh won Ukraine’s second gold of these championships with a tremendous effort of 21.43m – almost a metre better than Irina Korzhanenko’s silver winning mark of 20.56.

Pavlysh completely dominated the competition. Her best – a championship record – came in the second round, but she was leading anyway thanks to a 20.72 opener. She also threw 21.39 in the last round and even her worst effort of 20.26 was better than the 3rd place mark of Svetlana Krivelyova.

Note:
Both Vita Pavlysh and Irina Korzhanenko failed their Maebashi doping control tests. They were each banned for two years and so the title went to former champion Krivelyova. Poland’s Krystyna Zabawska (silver) and the USA’s Teri Tunks (bronze) were the other upgradees.

Gold Medallist -PAVLYSH Vita (UKR)
"The conditions were perfect, the organisation and especially the equipment. On behalf of the whole Ukrainian team I would like to thank Nishi for excellent support.

The competition was quite easy. The best one I had (21.43) was not even technically perfect. There is a lot in reserve. If I had a throw without mistakes, I would have a result of 22 metres or more. I am still physically relatively frail in comparison with other competitors."

Silver Medallist - KORZHANENKO Irina (RUS)
"I do not want to comment on the competition!"

Bronze Medallist - KRIVELYOVA Svetlana (RUS)
"The whole thing was OK, but I liked the championships in Tokyo 1991 better. I was third there too. The competition was quite cosy, not many competitors. I liked that. Therefore for me the straight final schedule without qualification was definitely to my liking. "
