| There were no surprises in the women's relay heats. The first heat registered the victory of the Russian team with 3:24.51, the world best performance of the year. Australia came second in 3:27.31 thanks to an excellent last leg run by World 400m Champion Cathy Freeman. The Germans, current world champions, won the second heat with 3:24.80 ahead of Czech Republic (3:25.58) and Jamaica. This team qualifies as one of the best losing times. The third heat was taken by the United States in 3:25.10. Italy was second in 3:31.67. The main absent of the final will be Nigeria. |

No hubo sorpresas en el estreno de las pruebas de relevos.
La primera de las series registro la victoria del equipo ruso en 3:24.51 con mejor marca
mundial de la temporada. Segunda fue Australia con 3:27.31 gracias a una excelente ultima
posta de la campeona mundial en 400m.l. Cathy Freeman. Las alemanas, actuales campeonas
del mundo, se impusieron en la segunda serie con 3:24.80. En segunda posicion se clasifico
la Republica Checa (3:25.58) por delante de Jamaica, esta ultima bronce en Atenas. No
obstante las jamaicanas pasan por tiempos con 3:27.78. En la ultima serie vencio Estados
Unidos con 3:25.10 sin Inger Miller en su relevo. Italia finalizo en segunda plaza con
3:31.67, el peor registro de las clasificadas para las semifinales, donde la gran ausente
sera Nigeria.  |
