Yury Shayunou – 80.72m in Minsk

Minsk, Belarus21yearold Yury Shayunou won the Romuald Klim Trophy on Saturday. His result in the men’s Hammer Throw (80.72) makes him currently the second longest thrower of the season worldwide. The Women’s Hammer Throw was taken by Maryia Smaliachkova. This was her second successive tournament win, and this time her result was season best – 72.86m.

Shayunou, showed 78.48m in the first series and was in the lead till the fourth attempt. But Pavel Kryvitski, who won the Olympic Champions Trophy meeting in Minsk one week ago, then sent the hammer out to 79.48m in response. However, Shayunou was not to be beaten and he threw 80.72 in his own counter-attack. It was his personal best.

Shayunou, is trained by his father Victor Shayunou, and received a prize and congratulations from Romuald Klim.

“I am very happy with a victory and especially the result,” the young Belarus thrower shared his thoughts. “I wanted to prove to all, including myself that I can throw beyond 80m. In the end of May in Brest I won the competitions and here now I managed to throw beyond 80m. I hope to show the same series at the World Student Games and the European team championship where I am going to compete in the near future.”

Kryvitski, who is assisted by the double Olympic medallist (1992, 2000) Igor Astapkovich, took second place (79.48), Andrei Varantsou was third with 75.88m in the second attempt.

Maryia Smaliachkova three times sent the Hammer beyond 72m, with her best coming in the fifth round - 72.86m. Ex-record holder of Belarus Volha Tsander sent the hammer beyond 70 m in the third attempt and established a personal season best. She was second (71.43), and Alena Matoshka third - 69.03.

Aleh Dubitski, World Junior Championships 2008 bronze medallist, was best at juniors Hammer Throw with a new Belarussian junior record of 77.60m.

Iryna Yatchenko took the women’s Discus Throw with 60.25m, Ruslan Khlybau won the men’s with a 59.38m throw.
