Olympic champion Stephanie BrownTrafton reflects on the year that saw her topping the women's Discus Throw standings and looks forward to more success in 2009!

“January is here and it’s time for new resolutions!

“I have a few new resolutions this year and here they are: Win a USA National Title in Eugene and win a World Championships a medal in Berlin.

“My coach tells me that if I take care of the technique in the ring and get all of my workouts done that the results will happen.

“This brings me to a discussion about goal setting. Should our goals be based on the intended result of a competition or should they be more granular?

“For example, should my goal be to win the World Championships or should it be to make it through the daily workout giving 100% and not skipping that last set of crunches.

“I think it can be both.

“I will make it a goal to take care of the details in my training life as well as at work and at home. I also intend to see a lot of improvement in my consistency and I intend to win another medal.

“I was pretty happy to see that Track and Field News ranked me the top ranked discus thrower in the world. Going head to head, Barrios beat me and the rest of the field by a wide margin at the last two Grand Prix meetings last year. I was happy to have a good showing at those meets after the craziness of winning a gold medal had set in.

“There are many more people who want to beat me this upcoming year. There has never been a US women's discus thrower to rank number one in the world ranks.

“2008 was a year of firsts and 2009 will be a statement to how much I really want to stay on top of the world.

“I think I will go out and finish that last set of crunches now!”
