Moscow, RussiaHeated battles in the women’s 400m and Long Jump were the key highlights on the second day of the Russian Indoor championships on Saturday (27) where 11 titles were decided.

In the 400, not even a studied reading of the photo could separate Tatyana Firova and Natalya Nazarova at the finish. In the end, it was declared a tie, with each clocking 51.39. Firova, a World and Olympic medallist in the 4x400m Relay, clocked a world-leading 51.22 in Friday’s first round, a personal best for the 27-year-old. Elena Migunova was third in 51.86.

The intensity of battle to secure spots for the World Indoor Championships was clearly illustrated in the women’s Long Jump, where just two centimetres separated the top three. Here, Anna Nazarova prevailed with a 6.75m leap, just one centimetre better than Tayana Kotova. Risin start Darya Klishina, still a junior, had to settle for third with a 6.73m best.

About that, how intense the struggle in sector for length jump was is possible to judge because three prize-winners were divided only by two centimetres: Anna Nazarova (6.75), Tatyana Kotova (6.74) and Darya Klishina (6.73).

Tatyana Chernova, who is Doha-bound in the Pentathlon, was fourth with a solid 6.65m effort.

The men’s 400m was nearly as close, but here, at least, Dmitriy Buryak was given the endge over Denis Alekseev, with both stopping the clock in 46.21. Maxim Dyldin was third in 46.41.

Rounding out the sprint action, Yuliya Katsura took revenge in the 200m for her third place finish in Friday’s 60m. She clocked a personal best 23.15 to turn back 60m winner Yevgeniya Polyakova (23.46) and Yelena Bolsun (23.57). The men’s title went to Roman Smirnov (20.81), who finished ahead of 20-year-old Vyacheslav Kolesnichenko (20.98) and Ivan Terplyh (21.28).

Both the men’s and women’s 800m contests were tactical affairs. The women’s title went to reigning European indoor champion Maria Savinova who won comfortably in 2:00.78. World leader Evgeniya Zinurova (2:02.26) was second and Anna Alminova (2:03.97) third. In the men’s race, the title went to little-known Michael Vasilenko who clocked 1:51.66. Stepan Poistogov (1:51.93) and Dmitry Bogdanov (1:52.09) were second and third.

In the women’s High Jump, both Irina Gordeyeva and Svetlana Shkolina topped out at 1.95m, with Gordeyeva taking the victory on countback. Victoriya Klyugina was third at 1.92m.

Taras Moiseyenko was the surprise winner in the men’s Triple Jump with a 16.80m leap, ahed of Evgeniy Plotnir (16.75m) and Igor Spasovhodsky (16.73m).

The Shot Put titles went to Olga Ivanova (18.64m and Maxim Sidorov (19.38m).
