De Grasse set for Oslo and Stockholm appearances – IAAF Diamond League

Organisers have announced that Canada's triple Olympic medallist Andre De Grasse will be among the sprint headliners at the Oslo Bislett Games and Bauhaus-Galan meeting in Stockholm, the fifth and sixth stops respectively of the 2017 IAAF Diamond League series.

De Grasse, 22, is the latest in a long line of brilliant Canadian sprinters and now stands on the verge of taking over the mantle of the No.1 sprinter in the world. History will refer to the likes of Harry Jerome, Donovan Bailey and of more recently Bruny Surin as phenomenal sprinters who represented Canada and there is no question that De Grasse is of the same calibre.

The native of Ontario will return to Bislett Stadium in Oslo, Norway for the Oslo Bislett Games (15 June). It will be De Grasse’s second visit to Oslo after winning the 100m at last year’s IAAF Diamond League event. The triple Olympic medallist will then make his Swedish debut at the Bauhaus Galan in Stockholm’s historic Olympic stadium on 18 June.

De Grasse first came to notice on the US collegiate circuit where he dominated the NCAA Championships representing the University of Southern California. Some of his winning times, albeit windy were amongst the quickest times ever recorded – 9.75 in the 100m, 19.58 in the 200m – and gave a hint of his awesome potential.

At the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015, De Grasse further demonstrated his precocious talent when he finished with a bronze medal in the 100m behind Usain Bolt. A year later at the Rio Olympic Games, he was a busy athlete, winning two individual medals – bronze in the 100m and silver in the 200m – and helping Canada to another bronze medal in the 4x100m.

Last weekend, De Grasse ran the third leg on Canada's victorious 4x200m relay squad at the IAAF/BTC World Relays Bahamas 2017. He'll be making his 2017 IAAF Diamond League debut next weekend at the series kick-off event in Doha.
