Monaco - The prize giving ceremony of the Peace and Sport Awards 2009 took place last night in the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and over 400 other high-profile personalities from sport, politics, business and civil life who had assembled this week in the Mediterranean Principality for the International Peace and Sport Forum.
During the Awards Ceremony, the prestigious Peace and Sport Image of the Year was presented to IAAF President Lamine Diack for his initiative to unite the granddaughter of the German athlete Luz Long and the granddaughter of USA’s Olympic champion Jesse Owens at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Berlin, for the medal ceremony for the men’s Long Jump.
This image perpetuates the courageous and unforgettable friendship between their grandfathers that began during the 1936 Olympics, where Owens best Long for gold. It bears testimony to the immense power of sport to be stronger than hatred and extremism. The prize was awarded in partnership with SPORTELMonaco and Agence France-Presse.
The Peace and Sport Awards were inaugurated in 2008.

Le Président Diack reçoit le Grand Prix de l'Image Peace and Sport de l'année
Monaco – La cérémonie de remise des prix des Peace and Sport Awards 2009 s'est déroulée hier soir en présence de SAS le Prince Albert II de Monaco et plus de 400 autres personnalités représentant notamment les mondes du sport, de la politique, des affaires qui s'étaient réunies dans la principauté méditerranéenne pour le Forum International Peace and Sport.
Au cours de la cérémonie, le prestigieux Grand Prix de l'Image Peace and Sport de l'année a été remis au président de l'IAAF, M. Lamine Diack pour son initiative qui a permis de réunir la petite-fille de l’athlète allemand Luz Long et la petite-fille du champion américain Jesse Owens, à l’occasion des Championnats du Monde d’athlétisme 2009 à Berlin, lors de la remise des médailles du saut en longueur.
Cette image perpétue la courageuse et inoubliable amitié née entre leurs aïeuls pendant les Jeux Olympiques de 1936. Elle témoigne de l’immense pouvoir du sport d’être plus fort que la haine et l’extrémisme. Ce prix a été décerné en partenariat avec SPORTELMonaco et l’Agence France-Presse.
Les Peace and Sport Awards ont été inaugurés en 2008.
