An IAAF national member federation is a national governing body for athletics (track & field) affiliated to the IAAF.

Only one member from each country or territory may be affiliated to the IAAF and must abide by the rules and regulations of the IAAF.

The number of affiliated federations has grown dramatically from the 17 founding members in 1912.

The total number of countries and territories currently affiliated to the IAAF stands at 213 – following the approval of South Sudan as a provisional member by the IAAF Council in November 2014 (full membership has to be approved by the IAAF Congress, which will next be held in August 2015) – which places the IAAF among the world’s largest sporting organisations, and with more members than the United Nations.
