An IAAF national member federation is a national governing body for athletics (track & field) affiliated to the IAAF.

Only one member from each country or territory may be affiliated to the IAAF and must abide by the rules and regulations of the IAAF.

The number of affiliated federations has grown dramatically from the 17 founding members in 1912.

The total number of countries and territories currently affiliated to the IAAF stands at 214 – following the approval of Kosovo as a provisional member by the IAAF Council in April 2015 (full membership has to be approved by the IAAF Congress, which will next be held in August 2015) – which places the IAAF among the world’s largest sporting organisations, and with more members than the United Nations.
