MonteCarloThe IAAF World Athletics Day Draw 2009 has taken place to decide the names of the lucky 18 kids who will be invited for a trip of a lifetime this August to visit the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Berlin, Germany, and those six schools who will receive sports equipment.
By the conclusion of the month of May, 164 of the 213 IAAF Member Federations had participated in IAAF World Athletics Day 2009, and last week in the IAAF HQ in Monte-Carlo President Lamine Diack with the assistance of General Secretary Pierre Weiss presided over the official draw of winning names.
Of the 164 Member Federations which participated in the IAAF World Athletics Day overall, 90 took part in all three elements of this annual youth festival – competitions for Clubs, and for Schools both individual kids and teams.
149 Member Federations organised competitions involving Clubs, 142 organised competitions involving individual School kids and 99 organised competitions involving teams from Schools.
The World Athletics Day 2009 Draw determined the winners as follows:
12 children from the Youth Age Group (1 Boy and 1 Girl by Area) from the winners of Club competitions, and 6 youngsters (13-15 years old, 1 per Area) from the winners of School Individual competitions.
These 18 ‘lucky winners’ of the draws from the individual competitions will be invited to attend part of the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, Germany (August 2009 - *travel and full-board accommodation costs covered by the IAAF).
In addition, 6 Teams (13-15 years old, 1 per Area) from the winners of School Team competitions shall each receive one set of youth athletics equipment for their school.
Yet it is not just these selected athletes who gain from the experience, as thousands of gifts such as T-Shirts, posters and pins are distributed to each competing Member Federation, with an IAAF World Athletics Day Diploma presented to all participants, helping to encourage enthusiasm for Athletics, the world’s most international sport.
