Teruji Kogake passes away

The IAAF was extremely sad to receive the news today that Teruji Kogake, Honorary Vice President of Japanese Federation had passed away at 21:43(JST) on May 9, 2010 at the hospital in Tokyo due to liver failure aged at 77-years-old. The IAAF offers its sincerest condolences and sympathies to his family and friends.

Teruji Kogake was born on December 18, 1932 Joge Town in Hiroshima Prefecture. He graduated from Waseda University in Tokyo.

At the Japanese Federation he was a Head Coach for many years and a Vice President from 1995 to 2005. Among the other positions of distinction which he held in hios career were as Vice President of Japanese Olympic Committee(1999-2003), and as an IAAF Veterans’ Committee Member(1995-2007).

As a triple jumper, he participated in Melbourne Olympics in 1956 taking 8th place.

Before the Games at the National Championships which were the Olympic team trials he set a world's best for low altitude conditions with a 16.48m performance, though Adhemar Ferreira da Silva(BRA) had made 16.56m at the Pan-American Games in Mexico City in 1955.

In 2005, Teruji Kogake was awarded the "Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon" at a conferment ceremony held at the Imperial Palace.

The wake will be conducted at 18:00 on May 13, 2010 and the funeral at 10:00 on May 14 both at “Aoyama Sogisho (Aoyama Ceremony Hall)” in Tokyo.
